OUR MODEL

A Multi-faceted, Departmental Approach

To drive impactful and sustainable efforts against sexual violence, Action Against Sexual Violence (AASEV) operates through an integrated four-pillar methodology. This strategic model is designed to create systemic change by addressing every dimension of the crisis—from immediate individual needs to long-term societal transformation.

Our vision is clear: a Zambia where every individual lives free from sexual violence, with universal access to justice, support, and empowerment, and where communities promote human rights, dignity, and safety for all.

This vision demands more than isolated interventions. It requires a coordinated, multi-front strategy where each department works in synergy to heal survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, prevent future violence, and reform the very systems that allow injustice to persist. Below, we outline the four core departments that form the foundation of our work and our theory of change.

Pillar 1: Outreach & Support (Healing)

When survivors take the courageous step to seek help, our Outreach & Support Department provides the immediate, compassionate response they deserve. This department serves as the critical first point of contact, offering safety, medical care, counselling, and economic support to help individuals rebuild their lives with dignity.

Why it's essential: Healing cannot begin without safety. This department ensures that no survivor faces trauma alone, creating the stable foundation necessary for them to engage with legal systems and community reintegration.

Pillar 2: Justice & Legal Advocacy (Deterrence & Peace)

Healing requires justice. Our Justice & Legal Advocacy Department guides survivors through Zambia’s legal system, providing pro-bono representation, case follow-up, and court accompaniment. We work to ensure that the law serves those it is meant to protect, not fail.

Why it's essential: A low conviction rate perpetuates impunity. By actively pursuing legal accountability, we restore survivors' faith in the system and send a powerful message that sexual violence will not be tolerated

Pillar 3: Awareness & Prevention (Changing Norms)

To prevent violence before it occurs, we must transform the social norms that allow it to flourish. Our Awareness & Prevention Department leads community dialogues, school programs, and national media campaigns to debunk harmful myths, teach consent, and engage traditional leaders as allies.

Why it's essential: Lasting safety is built on a culture of respect and equality. By educating communities and shifting public attitudes, we address the root causes of violence and empower everyone to be part of the solution.

Pillar 4: Reform Advocacy department

ndividual support and case-by-case justice are crucial, but not enough to end the crisis. Our Reform Advocacy Department works at the national level to change the laws, policies, and institutions that fail survivors. Through research, coalition-building, and strategic campaigns, we push for systemic reforms that protect all Zambians.

Why it's essential: True, nationwide change requires fixing broken systems. This department ensures that the challenges faced by every survivor inform better policies and stronger institutions for future generations.

How our model Works: THE SYNERGY OF CHANGE

Our departments do not work in isolation. They are intentionally designed to reinforce and inform one another, creating a powerful cycle of impact:
1. A survivor finds safety through the Outreach Department.
2. Their case is pursued by the Justice Department, demanding accountability.
3. Their community is educated by the Awareness Department to prevent recurrence.
4. Their experience fuels advocacy by the Reform Department to change laws and policies.

This integrated approach ensures we are not just treating symptoms, but dismantling the very architecture of sexual violence in Zambia—one survivor, one community, one law at a time.
